Why You Should Have Started Recruiting Your Summer Interns Yesterday

This is the most important season for summer intern hiring. With the start of fall, the world of college recruiting has its sights set on Summer 2014. Companies and recruiters alike are out in droves at career fairs on campuses across the country promoting their brand, handing out schwag, and searching for their next crew of summer interns and new grad hires. Fast Fact: The average Fortune 1000 employer goes to 25 career fairs during the college recruiting season. Regardless of whether you’re a startup, small business, or mom ‘n pop shop, entering this pool sooner rather than later is important.

But we only hire a handful of interns. Why should we start so early? This season is the beginning of a real process that, for many students (and companies), begins far in advance of the summer. Over 30% of the students we surveyed said they started looking for an internship well over 3 months in advance. Further, the war for technical talent is competitive. With companies like Google, Facebook, and Square recruiting technical interns more than 9 months ahead of their start date, you don’t want to miss out on this competitive pool of technical talent.

But we don’t have the resources to attend career fairs! Don’t worry about it. In fact, as it runs out, career fairs aren’t the powerhouse recruiting tools they once were. Our annual Intern Report shows that only 3.8% of students found career fairs to be the most helpful source in their internship hunt. Instead, join the likes of NetApp, Yelp, and Nestlé Purina and post your summer 2014 internship listings on InternMatch and reach college students at over 800 campuses across the country.

Don’t forget about Diversity – The longer you wait to begin your search, the more likely you are to pull your interns from local colleges, universities, or employee referrals. Attracting and recruiting a diverse group of college talent takes time. By planning in advance and casting a wider net, you have a better chance of recruiting interns with a wide variety of backgrounds and experience. Here at InternMatch we have hired  interns from El Paso to Boston, and from Spain to Michigan. Why? Because we practice what we preach.

Recruiting a killer team, like crafting a killer blog post, takes time and energy. If you want to compete with the the big guys and help drive your business goals forward, don’t put your summer hiring off. Begin now!
